This photograph
shows the cracked liner of the propeller tail shaft. The more
interesting story was that after re-lining the stern tube
with new staves of lignum vitae (a hardwood) and the staves
then being bored concentric, it was found that the stern
tube was misaligned. This was later found from
information by the yard which built the ship. This resulted
in the stern tube having to be relined again with lignum
vitae, and then having to be bored true to the alignment of
the main engine flywheel. Keith Crelin was the Chief
Engineer at the time.
